Your Kids Will Love Decorating These Fun Monster Cupcakes!
Planning a birthday party or not-so-spooky kids’ Halloween event? Your little monsters will have a blast decorating these adorable and silly monster cupcakes. This wickedly fun cupcake decoration is colorful and cute, but it is so easy to duplicate. Kids will love getting to participate in the decorating fun and customizing their own, unique monsters. Of course, they will also enjoy getting to eat them afterwards!
One thing that makes these cupcakes fun and silly (not scary) is the use of brightly colored frosting (with matching Jimmy sprinkles) and candy eyes. The end result is more reminiscent of Pixar’s Monsters Inc. than those scary, hiding-under-the-bed monsters. If you are looking for scary monsters…sorry. If you are looking for cute, happy, kid-friendly monsters? We got you covered.
It’s All About the Decorations
This isn’t a cupcake recipe as much as a decorating tutorial. Therefore, before you get started with your monster decorations, you will want to pre-bake your plain cupcakes and let them cool. Our ingredients list is intended for 12 cupcakes, but you can multiply this as needed. Feel free to use your favorite, from-scratch cupcake recipe.
Or, if you are in a hurry, just go for that box mix! (Let’s face it, once they’re decorated, who is is going to know or care?)
Once your cupcakes are cool to the touch, you will put your frosting into a piping bag with a Wilton 1m attachment . If you are working with kids, you may want to set up several different piping bags and attachments, each with a designated bright color. We used pink, purple and blue (exact colors are listed in the printable recipe below.)
Pipe the frosting over each cupcake in a circular direction, working in a swirl pattern from the inside to the outside.
After your cupcakes are frosted, make sure you have your Jimmies Sprinkles set up (in coordinating colors, of course). I think it works well to place each color of sprinkles on its own plate or bowl. Once your sprinkles are set up, turn each cupcake upside down and press it into the coordinating pile of Jimmies Sprinkles. The effect makes it look like your cupcakes are “furry”–which is perfect for these monster cupcakes!
Next, you really get to be creative. Use the candied eyes, and whatever other candy you like, to give your monster cupcakes faces and expressions! You can really use any kind of candy you want. Twizzlers, jelly beans, Candy Corn and Pearl Sprinkles are all good options. If you are decorating these as an event/activity at a party, you could even make it a competition to see who comes up with the most creative monster! Check out some our ideas below for some inspiration!
Did you make these (or do you plan to) for an event or birthday party! We want to see your wicked-cute creations!
