Old Fashioned Sausage Gravy and Biscuits Recipe

Sharing is caring!

Every year as our family’s birthdays roll around, we offer to make them anything they want for dinner.  I’m actually surprised my hubby hasn’t asked for this yet because he absolutely loves my old-fashioned sausage gravy and biscuits recipe. We have it regularly when we have breakfast for dinner!

Old Fashioned Sausage Gravy and Biscuits Recipe

Did you know there is a war raging between the north and the south that still continues to this day?  It’s about how to eat biscuits and gravy! Yes, really! Being from the south we make this recipe all the time but I don’t open my biscuit and slather it on. I prefer the gravy on the side and to dip my biscuit in it. This is not the case for my husband! He splits his biscuit open and just slathers it on as thick as he can! This, of course, requires a fork to cut the biscuits and eat it. I, on the other hand, use my fingers to eat my biscuit. I thought every one did! It has caused some heated debates in our house on the proper way to eat biscuits and gravy. No one has conceded yet.

How do you eat yours?

Ingredients

picture of ingredients to make biscuits and gravy

Bag of frozen biscuits (can use canned too) If you are more of a morning person you can make your own biscuits.

One 12-ounce tube bulk sausage (we are Messianic so we eat turkey sausage)

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups milk

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Directions

Heat a large skillet (we like to use a cast iron skillet when possible) over medium-high heat. Add the sausage, break it up and cook until well browned and cooked through, 7-10 minutes. It should look like cooked ground beef.

Bake your biscuits according to the packaging.

Move the browned sausage to a bowl (save the rendered fat in the pan!)

Whisk the flour into the fat and cook, stirring, for about 1 minute. Pour the milk into the skillet while whisking and bring the gravy to a boil.

Lower the heat and simmer gently for 2 minutes until the gravy is thick.

Stir in the sausage and season with pepper. Split the biscuits in half and divide them among plates.

Top each biscuit with some of the gravy and serve immediately, or however, you choose to eat it!
