FDA Issues Warning About Avocados

Sharing is caring!

If guacamole is on your holiday menu, take note… The FDA has issued a new warning about avocados.

This warning may seem so obvious, after all we have always been told to wash fruits and vegetables before eating them. However, since we don’t eat the peel of an avocado, apparently many skip the washing part. But the FDA is saying that washing avocados is the only sure way to prevent bacteria and dirt from transferring from the peel to your knife while sharing this:

Approximiately one in every five avocados tested positive for a bacteria that can cause Listeria.

The FDA also says consumers should not just wash avocados, but should scrub all produce with a produce brush before drying it with a paper towel.

I have always struggled with how to tell if an avocado is over-ripe. This video not only shows us how to tell, but how to cut, slice and pit an avocado too… in less than 60 seconds! You are welcome!

If you are looking for a yummy quacamole recipe, here are several to choose from.
