Over 164,000 pounds of ground turkey is being recalled by A Minnesota-based poultry producer.  Jennie-O Turkey Store is recalling ground turkey products that may be contaminated with salmonella.

164,000 Pounds of Ground Turkey is Being RecalledThe USDA issued a release on December 21st that the poultry company has expanded an earlier recall issued in November. The newly recalled products were produced at a Minnesota facility and have markings saying to use or freeze by November 12 or 13.

Why is it being recalled?

The announcement comes as the FSIS and Centers for Disease Control investigate an outbreak of illnesses to 216 people across 38 states that began in November and has resulted in one death, per the Today show. Jennie-O Turkey is recalling approximately the raw ground turkey products because they may be contaminated with Salmonella Reading, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. This is the second recall.

What to look for?

The recall applies to 3-pound and 2.5-pound packages of Jennie-O ground turkey and Stater Bros. ground turkey, as well as one-pound packages of Jennie-O ground turkey, taco-seasoned ground turkey, and Italian-seasoned ground turkey, according to the recall notice. The products have “EST. P-579” inside the USDA mark of inspection or on the side of the tray.

  • 3-lb. packages of “Jennie-O GROUND TURKEY 93% LEAN | 7% FAT” with “Use or freeze by” dates of 11/12/18 and 11/13/18 on the side of the trays.
  • 1-lb. packages of “Jennie-O GROUND TURKEY 93% LEAN | 7% FAT” with “Use or freeze by” dates of 11/12/18 on the side of the trays.
  • 1-lb. packages of “Jennie-O TACO SEASONED GROUND TURKEY” with “Use or freeze by” dates of 11/12/18 on the side of the trays.
  • 1-lb. packages of “Jennie-O ITALIAN SEASONED GROUND TURKEY” with “Use or freeze by” dates of 11/12/18 on the side of the trays.
  • 3-lb. packages of “Jennie-O Ground Turkey 85% LEAN | 15% FAT” with a “Use or freeze by” date of 11/13/18 on the side of the trays.
  • 2.5-lb. packages of “Jennie-O Ground Turkey 93% LEAN | 7% FAT” with a “Use or freeze by” date of 11/13/18 on the side of the trays.
  • 3-lb. packages of “STATER BROS. 85% LEAN | 15% FAT ALL NATURAL Ground Turkey” with a “Use or freeze by” date of 11/12/18 on the side of the trays.

Where was it sold?

Products subject to the recall were shipped to Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and Wisconsin, according to The Associated Press. FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers.

What to do?

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
